Four Artists Paint One Tree

A fascinating Disney short, featuring four in-house artists: Marc Davis, Josh Meador, Eyvind Earle, and Walter Peregoy. They all paint the same tree, and discuss their creative processes and artistic choices. I’ve always wanted to see Earle paint, so this was quite the treat! Found via Muddy Colors.

Video: Franquin, Morris, Peyo, and Roba

Here’s a neat video of André Franquin (Gaston), Maurice “Morris” De Bevere (Lucky Luke), Pierre “Peyo” Culliford (The Smurfs), and Jean Roba (Billy & Buddy) taking part in a drawing game. The point of the game, it seems, is to draw three versions of your character. Then the other contestants set up traps for your character, and you have to figure out how to render these traps harmless — all by drawing. Found via The Comics Reporter.

The Art of Richard Thompson

Found this lovely (short) documentary on Richard Thompson on Comics Reporter. I should probably get around to actually buying some Cul de Sac collections soon.

Noah Bradley’s “Art Camp”

Forgot to post this one. Noah Bradley, a well-known concept artist and illustrator, uploaded a free sample from his online course, Art Camp, late last year. Well worth a watch!

Comic Book Cartography

I’ve always had a weak spot for cross-sections, diagrams and maps. Here’s a nice collection of maps and cross-sections from comics, courtesy of Lines and Colors and Comic Book Cartography.

Tove Jansson 100 Years: Comics Workshop

I held a three day workshop at Ådnahall in Arna this week. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tove Jansson, so what better way to celebrate than making Moomin minicomics?

Bygdanytt 24.06.2014

I was interviewed by Bygdanytt, the local paper. Read the article here (paywall). Check my Instagram account for photos from the course.

Charming Portrait of Cartoonist Rowland Emett (1906–1990)

A short Pathé Pictorial documentary, showing “[…] the eccentric cartoonist / artist as he constructs a new sculpture out of bits and pieces bought at junk shops. He checks a plan which he has drawn then goes inside his house to the drawing board. Shot of him painting colour into a cartoon drawing of a crazy invention”.
